Family Law

The practice area of family law involves some of the most emotionally-charged issues families can face. These issues are difficult to navigate and can be incredibly complex. When you are facing any type of family law concern, you need a qualified legal professional to provide guidance and representation.

I have extensive experience with all types of family law cases in Tennessee. Whatever your situation may be, I will do my best to help you achieve the best outcome possible.

About Family Law

Family law covers a number of different legal concerns. Some of the most common matters I handle within this practice area include:

  • Divorce, including both contested and uncontested cases
  • Child custody arrangements and visitation schedules
  • Child support
  • Modifications to existing agreements

I understand that every client’s situation is unique, and I always take the time to learn the details of my clients’ cases before I offer any advice. My goal is to offer a realistic, sensible approach that takes the nature of your situation, your goals, and the specifics of Tennessee law into consideration.

Divorce

Divorce is one of life’s most difficult transitions. In addition to the grief that comes naturally with the end of any important relationship, you will also find yourself dealing with a host of legal concerns and paperwork that must be completed. Depending on the situation, there may be disputes that must be resolved as well.

Although no amount of support can make this process painless, having the right attorney on your side can make a huge difference. As a seasoned family law attorney, I have the experience and knowledge necessary to help you simplify your divorce as much as possible so you can move on with your life.

As your representative in divorce, I will be by your side throughout every stage of the process. I will help you to understand how Tennessee law applies as you deal with issues related to property division, debt division, child custody, and child support. In many cases, it will be possible to resolve some of these issues in mediation and avoid extra time in the courtroom. However, I will also represent you in front of the judge if your case must go to court.

Custody

As a parent, you want to know that your child is always safe and secure. You also want to maintain a positive relationship with this child as they grow. Unfortunately, if you and the child’s other parent are no longer together, you may face challenges as you work toward these goals.

About Child Custody

When a child’s parents are not living together, a formal child custody arrangement is highly recommended. Child custody arrangements not only reduce disputes between parents, but they can also provide more stability for the child. Either parent can initiate a child custody case at any time while the child is still a minor.

Two types of child custody exist: legal and physical. Legal custody determines who can make key decisions on the child’s behalf, while physical custody determines where the child lives. The court may award either type of custody to just one parent, or custody may be shared.

As your legal representative in a custody case, I will do my best to help you work toward a suitable custody arrangement that protects your relationship with your child. I can also help you petition the court to modify existing custody arrangements if your circumstances have changed since the arrangement was finalized.

Visitation

Even if you don’t have primary physical custody of your child, you will still be able to qualify for visitation rights in most cases. Visitation gives you an opportunity to spend quality time with your child on a regular basis so you can maintain an active presence in their life.

If you are a parent who wants to establish a new visitation schedule, I can help you through every step of the process. The exact amount of time you will be able to spend with your child will depend on many factors, including the child’s age, any special needs, your living situation, your history with the child, and the discretion of the court. As your attorney, my objective is always to help you achieve your goals. However, you can also count on me to provide a realistic assessment of your case so you know what to expect.

In addition to helping clients establish new visitation schedules, I can also help you pursue a modification to an existing schedule. For example, if you want to spend more time with your child, I can help you petition the court for a change to the current arrangement.

Child Support

The state of Tennessee requires both parents to provide financial support for their children in accordance with established state guidelines. However, certain factors can alter the amount of support each parent must provide. Whether you are a parent who wants to receive child support or you are a parent who is being asked to make payments, I am here to help you make sure your child support arrangement is fair.

Child support amounts can be affected by various factors, including the child custody arrangement, the income of each parent, the visitation schedule, and whether the child has any unique needs that impact financial support. When determining support amounts, the court will consider all of these factors. As your representative, I will do my best to present strong evidence in support of your position.

Should your situation change after a child support arrangement has been finalized, you may be able to petition the court for changes. If you are in this situation, I can help you determine whether a modification to your support agreement is possible. I can also guide you through the process of requesting a modification to your support agreement when appropriate.
