This is a subtitle for your new post
Are you thinking about filing for divorce? There are things you can do to prepare. In a nutshell, gather documents. I always ask for certain documents from my new clients upon being retained. These documents are necessary for the attorney to ascertain what the parties own and the value.
*Two years of statements from every checking, savings account, money markets, certificates of deposit.
*Copies of all documents representing debt, i.e., credit card statements and mortgage statements
*401k statements for the past two years.
*Pension statements or any documents showing a vested interest in a pension.
*Deed for any real property.
*Documents showing the purchase and sale of any collections for two years, such as coins.
*Documents showing the value of those collections or any other personal property.
*Copies of vehicle insurance cards or policies.
*Health insurance policy(ies).
*Documents showing the purchase and/or sale of stocks, as well as the value of the stocks.
*Statements showing the amount of any vehicle payments and the balance on the notes.
*If the parties have an interest in a business, any all documents showing the assets and debts of the business will have to be produced at a later date.
You do not have to have all of these documents before seeing a lawyer or filing for divorce, but anything you can do in advance is not only helpful, but it will also keep you from scrambling at the last minute.
